The algae that has everyone “up in arms” these days at Clearlake is called Lingia. It is much more "sticky" than previous types of algae and that is the reason folks are washing their boats after a trip - if possible. Most folks feel that the bloom is not quite as bad as last year - but still very bad. The prevailing afternoon northwest winds tend to push the algae south towards the Oaks area and the Red bud area. The algae really doesn't slow the fishing as much as the tremendous weed growth this year as a result of VERY clear water this spring. The bass can hang out anywhere in the hundreds of weedy areas. Some areas simply can't be fished properly. This tends to put more fishing pressure on the areas that can be successfully worked. The nights are getting a little longer now and we will have cooler than average weather this week. This may help conditions a little by Saturday. In talking to Terry Knight, from Lakeport, an other regarding the bite. all would agree that there is no more easy fishing as the bite has been slow - but steady. Unfortunately, the larger bass have made some changes this year and they are harder to locate. Even the DFG shocking boat hasn't found very many quality bass, and sadly enough, even fewer sub-legal fish. But don't be discouraged guys...overcoming challenges like this are what make champion bass anglers !
Good luck Future Pros!
